Here are some helpful tips for how to interact with children.
- Do not accept children’s excuses for forgetting their responsibilities
- Have children repeat what you asked them to do
- Use a timer to help children understand the allotted time to comply with directions
- Children are responsible for replacement of lost, broken or damaged things
- If children are unable to follow directions while doing an activity, then they should not do the activity
- Use written directions along with verbal directions
- Supervise your children as much as they need, to be successful
- Do not give in or argue with your child, you are the responsible adult
- If children do not pick up room before bed, pick up all objects and confiscate for a period of time
- Do not replace or get more toys, games, etc. until children show ability to take care of the ones they currently have
- Have children learn organizational skills
- Give children directions with only two or three steps
- Deliver directions in a supportive way
- Be consistent in your expectations
- Establish a regular routine
- Teach time management skills
- Have your child ask for help, do not rescue them
- Do not allow your child to question you in public
- Let your child know that total fairness is impossible
- Let your child know they need to ask for permission well in advance to do things
- Let your child know it is not okay to ask for permission in front of others or in public places
- Let your child know that privileges can be suspended immediately
