Runners’ etiquette

In the interest of promoting an enjoyable running experience for everyone at an event, we always encourage good runners’ etiquette.

Pre-race etiquette

  • Line up according to your pre-assigned bib color. The corrals will be color-coded to direct the faster runners to line up towards the front and walkers in the back.
  • Turn off your music and pay attention to the pre-race instructions.

Race etiquette

  • Run in a straight line without unnecessary weaving.
  • If you pass someone, say “on your right/left.”
  • Move to the side immediately without blocking runners if someone behind you says “excuse me” or “on your right/left.”
  • Pay attention to your surroundings. The course may not be closed to traffic. It is your responsibility to watch for oncoming traffic.

Aid station etiquette

  • When approaching an aid station, move to the side to grab your fluid/nutritional needs from the volunteers or the aid tables and then continue onward.
  • When finished, throw your used cup to the side away from the course and as close to an aid station as possible. When throwing the cup, toss it from waist height, not shoulder height to eliminate other people getting wet.

Finish line etiquette

  • Follow the instructions of the race officials at the finish.
  • Once you have crossed the finish line, keep moving forward until the end of the finish chute.
  • Exit the chute and meet up with friends or family in a central location.
