Running in Northeast Wisconsin or any cold weather climate is not easy in the winter months. Between the snow, wind, sleet and cold, we put our bodies through a lot that most would not. Here are a few tips for every runner training in the harsh winter elements:
- Shorter distances – During winter conditions, you should run shorter distances and stay closer to home. Running loops in your neighborhood can help if you get wet, cold or tired and you need to escape the elements.
- Shorten the stride – By shortening your stride, you are able to keep a better base so your chances of slipping and falling are reduced. A longer stride will increase your chances to falling and injuring yourself on the snow and ice.
- Winter running shoes – When the temperature falls, the cushioning in your shoes begin to harden. When you purchase your shoes for the winter, ask for shoes that have EVA foam cushioning. This material is least affected by cold temperatures. Also make sure the shoes have a sturdy upper with waterproof materials and supportive overlays.
- Traction control – If you need additional traction on your runs, you may want to look into Yaktraxs. These units slip over your shoes and help you get more traction in the snow. They do not work very well on ice.
- Pace – Easy does it. In winter conditions, don’t worry about pace. It is a great time to work on base miles and get ready for a hard training season. Slow it down and enjoy the company you run with.
