We all know there are safety glasses and that we should use them in certain situations. But did you know there are different types of safety glasses and various reasons of when and why you should wear them?

When do I need safety glasses?

You may need safety glasses at work. People working in occupations such as manufacturing, landscaping, welding, construction and automotive may be routinely exposed to objects and particles that are harmful to the eyes. The National Institute of Health says that more than 2,000 workers in the United States seek medical care each day for work-related eye injuries. Wearing safety glasses in hazardous situations can save a lot of pain and damage to your eyes, and eliminates the need for an emergency medical appointment and potentially taking time off work.

Safety glasses are also a necessity for several ‘do-it-yourself' projects. Landscaping debris can cause retina scratches, and automotive fluids can cause permanent damage to the eyes. Hobbies such as recreational firearm usage, welding and bicycling also expose the eye to all kinds of debris. Wearing safety glasses, while never a guarantee, greatly reduces the risk of any harm from those activities.

What safety glasses are right for me?

Your choice of safety glasses depends on several factors. What hazards are you trying to avoid by wearing safety glasses? Is the size of the glasses a concern? Do you need to look stylish in them? The answers to these questions can guide you in the search for the right pair of safety glasses.

For those who already need prescription glasses, it may be tempting to simply place the safety glasses over prescription glasses when needed. This, while convenient, can hold some risk when wearing multiple pairs of glasses. This can decrease the effectiveness of both and create a safety hazard for one or more to either fall off or move too close to the eyes. Safety glasses are also available in any prescriptions that regular lenses come in. Prescription safety glasses are ideal for frequent wear, such as at your daily job.
