Michael K. Ryan, MD, specializes in innovative treatment approaches to hip pain
Green Bay, Wis. – Prevea Orthopedics welcomes Michael K. Ryan, MD, a dual board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic and sports medicine surgeon specializing in hip preservation.
“Hip preservation is a highly specialized field of medicine not readily available across the country, and now, it can be accessed right here in Green Bay with Prevea Orthopedics,” says Dr. Ryan. “Anyone with recurring pain in their hip, groin or buttocks who still hasn’t found an answer or relief, could benefit from this care now being available locally.”
Hip preservation describes a group of surgical procedures that aim to fix various causes of hip pain and dysfunction in a normal, pre-arthritic hip joint to improve an individual’s hip function and reduce hip pain - while simultaneously preserving the natural hip joint and delaying or avoiding the need for total hip replacement. While hip preservation procedures are most often performed on young and active individuals suffering from painful hip conditions, they may also be recommended for aging adults, those with physically demanding jobs or lifestyles, or anyone with recurring hip pain or problems caused by conditions such as femoroacetabular impingement (FAI or hip impingement), hip dysplasia, labral tears, rotation abnormalities of the thigh bone (femur), and traumatic injuries.
“While total hip replacement is a necessary and highly effective treatment for many patients, especially those with moderate-to-severe osteoarthritis, there are some conditions – if caught early enough – in which the natural joint, cartilage, and tissues can be preserved. There is significant benefit to this as our natural joints and tissues are ‘living,’ allowing them to regenerate and last decades, unlike artificial hip joints which will inevitably wear out.”
Dr. Ryan comes to Green Bay from the prestigious Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Ala. to offer a comprehensive list of hip preservation procedures at Prevea Orthopedics including Hip Arthroscopy; Periacetabular Osteotomy (PAO); Surgical Dislocation of the Hip (SDH); and Femoral Rotational Osteotomy. He completed training for PAO as part of a fellowship in hip preservation in Bern, Switzerland where the PAO procedure, also known as the Bernese osteotomy, was pioneered.

“At each stage in my career, my patients have crafted by understanding of the importance of what I do,” says Dr. Ryan. “The value of normal, painless and functional movement is priceless, and the ability to restore it when it’s lost is a humbling endeavor. I am thankful for all my patients who have shown me the power of this experience.”
