Nearly 80 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history.

Screening mammograms detect abnormalities when they are too small to feel. Breast cancer doesn't normally show symptoms in its earliest stages. With regular mammograms, breast cancer is more likely treatable when caught early and mammograms can even detect some forms of pre-cancer before the development of a tumor.

All women should talk with their health care provider about the appropriate timing for screening mammograms, especially women at high-risk. A mammogram schedule will be based upon an individual’s health. At age 40, women should have a screening mammogram and continue to have one at least every other year. 

Prevea provides screening mammograms at three health centers in the Green Bay area and offers mobile mammography services at many Prevea health centers throughout Wisconsin.

While we encourage all women to establish care with a Primary Care Provider (PCP), if you have no history of breast cancer, have no current breast issues or concerns, and are eligible for a routine screening mammogram, you can self-refer without a physician order by calling (920) 496-4789. Breast cancer risk assessment program

Women who receive a screening mammogram are given an initial risk assessment score. If it's identified a person is high-risk or moderate risk with special risk factors, a referral to Prevea Breast Surgery’s high-risk program will be recommended. Our risk assessment services are offered in Green Bay.

Hospital mammography site

For those women who prefer to have a screening mammogram in a hospital setting, HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan also offers screening mammogram services with both digital technology and digital technology with 3-D enhancements. Mammography insurance coverage

Most screening mammograms are covered by your insurance company or Medicare on an annual basis beginning at age 40. We suggest you check with your insurance company for your specific coverage prior to your appointment. It is the patient’s responsibility to understand coverage provided by their individual health plan and whether any co-pay is required. To obtain that information, call the phone number on your insurance card and ask about the 2-D mammogram procedure code 77067 and the 3-D mammogram procedure code 77063. Most insurance plans cover 3-D screening mammography, but there may be exceptions to 100 percent coverage.

Types of screening mammograms

Prevea Health offers both digital technology and digital technology with 3-D enhancements. Talk to your provider to determine which option is best for you.

Digital technology, also called full field digital mammography (FFDM) or 2-D technology, has been done for years and is a great choice for women with no or low risk of breast cancer. A digital mammogram uses X-rays to produce an image of the breast, but instead of storing the image directly on film, the image is stored directly on a computer. This allows the recorded image to be magnified for the doctor to take a closer look.

3-D mammography (Tomosynthesis) is a recent advancement in breast imaging technology. Clinical studies have shown that mammography screening using 3-D equipment has a higher cancer detection rate when compared to digital mammography.

The 3-D mammogram is acquired when the X-ray tube moves in an arc and takes multiple pictures in a few seconds. The images show the breast tissue in separate layers, like the pages of a book. The exam takes about the same amount of time as a digital mammogram. Benefits of 3-D mammography:

A decrease in the number of women recalled for additional mammogram views.
A decrease in the number of breast biopsies with results that are not cancer.
An increase in detection of invasive breast cancer.
Cancer detection up to 15 months earlier, which improves treatment results.

Any woman can have a 3-D mammogram. It is highly recommended for women who are at high-risk for breast cancer.

Accreditations central to your care

Our breast health program is accredited through the American College of Radiology (ACR) in the modalities of breast imaging, mammogram and stereotactic. HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Cancer Centers is accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) and is currently recognized as an Integrated Network Cancer program—the highest level of accreditation possible for a non-teaching hospital.
